An Amazon Alexa skill that guides people living with Parkinson’s through exercises at a pace and difficulty they choose.

I designed the voice interaction, wrote Alexa’s prompts, and built the skill in Voiceflow. We tested a demo with users within two weeks. Their feedback shaped a launch version with five difficulty levels, four speed settings, and voice controls to start, pause, and resume.

2019 · 30 days to launch
Triad Health AI wanted to bring its exercise routines for people living with Parkinson’s to Amazon Alexa. Each session had to guide someone through a sequence of exercises using spoken instructions.
In the first round of testing, some participants found Alexa’s instructions too fast to follow. The team also needed to accommodate different levels of difficulty. Both choices needed to happen before the exercises began.
I handled UX design, UX writing, and voice interface design, then built the conversation in Voiceflow. The revised flow let people choose a difficulty level and a speed setting before starting.
During the routine, Alexa delivered instructions at the selected pace. Participants could start, pause, and resume by voice without reaching for a screen.
Choose from five difficulty levels and four speed settings.
Start the routine and hear the instructions at the selected pace.
Take a break and continue when ready.
The skill launched 30 days after the project began. The original case study records a 5.0 average Amazon rating and reports that Triad Health AI raised $10,000 in seed funding.
The original write-up also notes that Cathy Pearl discussed the project at SXSW 2019 and cites coverage in Harvard Business Review.
“Daniel is my go-to resource when building our tools for people living with Parkinson’s on the Amazon Alexa.”
