Reimaging life with Parkinson’s using Triad Health’s Amazon Alexa app

With the emergence of Smart Speakers and Smart Assistants, a new era of web accessibility has been ushered in. Triad Health A.I. had the vision to leverage voice-first solutions to slow the effects of Parkinson’s with exercise, in turn, helping those affected live well and stay healthy in the future.

Scaling access to physical therapy through the use of smart speakers.

Create a voice-app for the Amazon Alexa and Google Home platforms that can provide the type of personalized physical therapy regimens required of Parkinson’s patients, right in the comfort of their own home.

Project summary

Triad Health AI provides exercise that combines movement, voice, and cognition (aka the Triad) to people living with Parkinson’s.

They recruited Ally to help build their vision: a voice app for the Amazon Alexa to serve as a personal trainer providing specialized exercise regimens for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s, in an attempt to monitor and slow-down the effects of the disease.

Our approach required us to lean heavily on our UX design roots, as to make sure we’re championing and building for the best experience for a person living with Parkison’s.

The Strategy

Triad Health AI provides exercise that combines movement, voice, and cognition (aka the Triad) to people living with Parkinson’s.

They recruited me to help build their vision: a voice app for the Amazon Alexa to serve as a personal trainer providing specialized exercise regimens for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s, in an attempt to monitor and slow-down the effects of the disease.

The approach required us to lean heavily on my UX design roots, as to make sure we’re championing and building for the best experience for a person living with Parkison’s.

Goals of our design:

  • Have Alexa lead the call out for a specialized exercise program as created by Triad Health A.I. similar to that of a personal trainer or physical therapist.
  • Ensure Alexa can lead programs of various lengths, speeds, and difficulties
  • The ability to have Alexa randomize exercises
  • The ability for users to pick their difficulty level
  • The ability for users to pause and resume where they left off

One of the benefits of collaborating with Triad Helath A.I. was the ability to test iterations in front of actual users quickly. Within the matter of a couple weeks we had a demo that we were able to have users test and give us feedback on.

Proven Results

Together with Triad Health, we were able to develop version 1.0 of their physical therapy app that was highlighted by Harvard Business Review as well as Cathy Pearl (Head of Conversational Design Outreach at Google).
